[Korea] Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul
Gyeongbokgung Palace was built in 1395 by King Taejo Lee Seong-gye as the new royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty. Gyeongbokgung Palace was also called the "Bukgung Palace" because it is located in the north compared to Donggung Palace (Changdeokgung Palace) and Seogung Palace (Gyeonghuigung Palace). Gyeongbokgung Palace boasts the best size and architectural beauty among the five major palaces. The kings who held the coronation ceremony at Geunjeongjeon Hall in Gyeongbokgung Palace include the second Jeongjong, the fourth Sejong, the sixth Danjong, the seventh King Sejo, the ninth King Seongjong, the 11th King Jungjong, and the 13th King Myeongjong.
Gyeongbokgung Palace has the pain of burning many buildings during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, and during the reign of King Gojong, 7,700 buildings were rebuilt under the leadership of Heungseon Daewongun. However, with the fall of the dynasty, Gyeongbokgung Palace also lost its function as a royal palace as the assassination of Empress Myeongseong occurred again. In Gyeongbokgung Palace, the representative buildings of the Joseon Dynasty, Gyeonghoeru Pavilion and Hyangwonjeong Pavilion, remain in their original form, and the woldae and statues of Geunjeongjeon Hall represent the sculpture art of the time. Currently, the National Palace Museum is located on the west side outside Heungryemun, and the National Folk Museum is located on the east side of Hyangwonjeong Pavilion in Gyeongbokgung Palace.
