When you want to take a rest while looking around Kyoto's shrines and temples, stop by Suntory Kyoto Beer Factory. Suntory, which has long produced beer and whiskey, was founded in Osaka but later moved to the southern outskirts of Kyoto. Beer factory tours are very popular. Try to moisten your throat here. You can go to the beer factory by train or shuttle bus.
If you go from Kyoto Station, take the JR Kyoto Line and get off at Nagaoka-Kyo Station. You can take a shuttle bus from here to the beer factory. Or, the shuttle bus stops at Nishiyama Tennozan Station on the Hankyu Kyoto Line, so you can get on here.
Whiskey first, beer afterwards
At one time, Suntory operated only a whiskey distillery and manufactured the first Japanese whiskey to be registered as a trademark in the United States. If you go south by train for about 30 minutes from the beer factory, you can also look around Suntory Yamazaki Distillery.
After its success with whiskey, Suntory then began making its own beer, and soon became one of the most popular brewers in Japan.
