[Japan] Japanese Ryokan Guide (Ryokan often have hot spring baths for guests to enjoy)

Ryokan, traditional Japanese inns, offer more than just a place to stay

Japan's famed omotenashi (hospitality) is at the cornerstone of this accommodation experience. Potentially the oldest form of hotel in the world, Japan's ryokan are said to date back to the 8th century. These accommodations are imbued with Japanese tradition, making staying at one a memorable and cultural experience.

Ryokan are traditional Japanese inns found throughout the country

What to expect

Japanese ryokan can range from the traditional to modern, from sprawling resort to private villa retreat, onsen ryokan to urban establishment. Common elements to this most quintessential of Japanese accommodation, however, are tatami flooring, futon bedding, private baths (sometimes outdoor), yukata robes, sumptuous in-house kaiseki  multi-course dinners, and a traditional Japanese breakfast.

For some visitors to Japan, a stay at an authentic ryokan, offering the chance to experience local hospitality and personalized omotenashi customer service, is the most anticipated highlight of their visit.

Multi-course meals are a big part of the ryokan experience

Ryokan etiquette

A ryokan stay, with its emphasis on Japanese customs and procedures, may seem intimidating for the non-initiated. However, the staff is welcoming and ready to allay concerns. The purpose of your stay is relaxation, after all. Japanese customs, such as removing your shoes indoors, taking an onsen bath  and wearing a yukata, a cotton kimono-like robe donned by ryokan guests, will all be explained.

A ryokan stay typically includes a kaiseki ryori (formal, multi-course) dinner and traditional Japanese breakfast the next morning. Your meticulously presented meals will be cooked using local, seasonal ingredients and, depending on the ryokan, presented in either a communal eating hall or in your room. Some ryokan offer stays without meals, but the chance to dine in-house is considered an essential part of the experience.

Most ryokan have an onsen and many have a beautiful Japanese garden, too

Embrace authentic Japan

Some of Japan's more deluxe ryokan are renowned for their traditional architecture and landscaped garden settings. As a ryokan guest, you will be invited to don geta or zori slippers and a yukata gown to wander your landscaped surroundings. Expect to see stone arrangements, water features, artfully positioned plants and shrubs and the occasional Japanese teahouse.

Ryokan stays are priced per person, per room, with meals usually included. The average price of a ryokan stay hovers around the 15,000 yen per night mark, but at high-end establishments prices will charge more. Ryokan are located all over Japan, from prestigious establishments in the old capitals of Nara and Kyoto to mountain resort and onsen ryokan in the hills of Nagano  to contemporary resorts in Tokyo.

[Japan] Overnight stay at a temple

Shukubo provide traditional temple lodging and are open to visitors

Find inner peace in a sacred place

Since ancient times, monks who travel long distances have stopped by a place known as Shukubo. Seeing an increasing number of visitors who needed accommodation during the long journey, Shukubo began to open its doors to ordinary travelers as well. Recently, many visitors want to stay at various temples and experience various styles of Shukubo.

It is important to relieve physical fatigue, but it is also important to relieve mental fatigue. The Shukubo accommodation gives you a peaceful feeling, and here you have the opportunity to experience the life of a Buddhist monk. Even if it's just one day, you can escape the cares and worries of the world here.

Rooms and meals served may vary depending on the temple.

Shukubo is mostly similar, but each has its own way. Toilets are usually used for public use, and some temples offer luxury rooms or rooms with private bathrooms. It is best to check the payment method in advance, keeping in mind that some temples only accept cash when booking Shukubo accommodation. Also, room rates usually include dinner and breakfast. A small but important thing to pay attention to when staying in Shukubo is to respect the monks and not disturb them as much as possible. Monks want to help visitors and provide amazing cultural experiences, but don't forget that monks also practice every day.

Traditional Japanese rooms and meals

The traditional Japanese room has a mattress blanket filled with light cotton, and you can spread the blanket on the tatami floor and sleep soundly. Tatami is a traditional type of flooring commonly used in Japan. Tatami is made of bone glue and straw, which is similar to the objects found in martial arts training gyms.

The temple's meals that follow Buddhist doctrines and guidelines are also unique. The temple's meals are called 'shojin ryori' or temple food. Shojinryori does not use meat, fish, dairy products or eggs. There are many similarities with vegan cuisine.

In the case of alcohol, there are rules for drinking in every Shukubo. Some Shukubo can order alcohol as medicinal food or drink, but some places strictly prohibit it.

If you have any personal questions, it is best to contact Shukubo directly.

When you stay, you can relax and empty your mind, immersed in the sacred atmosphere of the temple garden and the beautiful surroundings carefully maintained by monks. Shukubo is the perfect place to ease all anxiety and anxiety and enjoy a truly spiritual moment.

Experience the daily life of a monk

To enjoy Shukubo to the fullest, you can participate in a dawn prayer known as Gongyo. The type of konkyo offered depends on the Buddhist sect that the Shukubo is related to. Like other religions, Buddhism also shows slightly different forms of faith from sect to sect. The most common denominations are Zhengtao (Jodo) Buddhism, Shingon Buddhism, and serial (Nichyren) Buddhism. There are various ways of performing gongyo in each sect, including reciting scriptures and using beads or clapping. Another activity that the public can participate in is meditation.

 a year-round rainy cafe

Heavy rain warning, the first department of College Namsan, launched to revive Gyeongridan-gil, is a rainstorm concept cafe that started with the idea that coffee tastes better on a rainy day. If you go up the bamboo staircase at the entrance of the cafe, you will find a building with a modern appearance and a large structure. Artificial rain is sprayed once every 30 minutes at Jungjeong Pavilion for about 15 minutes. When artificial rain is sprayed, you can take a picture with a large transparent umbrella provided by the cafe, and on a clear day, you can get an emotional life shot, and on a clear day, you can make a rainbow to provide another attraction.

The interior of the cafe boasts a black-toned interior and a space of space. In addition, a monitor tower in the center of the hall and a large screen are noticeable everywhere, which shows the weather and precipitation of countries such as Ethiopia and Brazil, the origin of coffee beans. The heavy rain watch not only has a concept but also has a great taste of coffee. If you enjoy weather-based drinks and desserts such as Sunny, Wind, and Cloud while watching rainwater flowing through large indoor windows, you can double the atmosphere and atmosphere of the cafe.

Because it preserves its old appearance, it is a valuable resource in the history of salt fields, and you can see the appearance of modern stone architecture.

The salt that we talk about in the museum contains information ranging from anthropological aspects to anecdotes about salt. In particular, it solves the misunderstanding that salt has been considered the main culprit of high blood pressure and diabetes, and provides useful information on salt such as salt history, culture, minerals, and bay salt fields. In addition, you can look at the economic history, technical history, social history, mythology, and art history of salt.In addition, it is designed to examine the daily lives of people in the Taepyeong Salt Farm and the process of making sea salt at a glance, and information on the reef, which has recently been attracting attention, can be acquired.

[Japan] Hiking Mt. Hachimantai

A flattop stratovolcano alive with wildlife and color

Towering at an impressive 1,613 meters high, Mt. Hachimantai is one of the best places to explore the stunning scenery of Iwate  and Akita  Prefectures, offering a range of great hiking trails.

If you are interested in geology, the mountain is a stratovolcano—also known as a composite volcano—naturally formed from many layers of hardened lava, pumice, and volcanic ash.

Don't Miss

Exploring hiking trails of varying levels

Hachiman-numa Pond and the surrounding marshland scenery

Going for a soak at Toshichi Onsen, a natural hot spring at an elevation 1,400 meters

How to Get There

Mt. Hachimantai is easily accessible from Morioka Station by car or public transport during the peak season between May and early November.

Take a bus bound for Hachimantai from stand 3 at the east exit of Morioka Station and get off at Chausuguchi. If traveling by car, take the Hachimantai Aspite Line, a sightseeing road which connects to Iwate Prefecture  in the east and Akita Prefecture  in the west.

Buses run from mid-April until early November. Services cease to operate in winter.

Popular trails

Climbing times for the various routes range from 40 minutes to two hours and differ in level of difficulty, but all offer equally beautiful mountain scenery. The footpaths are well maintained and suitable for beginners as well as more seasoned walkers.

One of the most popular trails in the area begins from the Chausuguchi bus stop and takes in the summit of Mt. Chausu, one of Hachimantai's neighboring peaks. The Hachimantai area and its many trails are particularly popular in October when the fall colors are at their best.

The easy way around

The shortest and most popular course is the marshland trail that loops around Hachiman-numa and Gama-numa, two wetland ponds. Much of the trail leads along a raised wooden platform with good views over the ponds and the greater wetland area.

Hachiman-numa Pond is the largest of the wetland ponds in the area with a circumference of a kilometer. While walking the trail, you can expect to encounter wild birds and a host of plant species, including several varieties of rare alpine foliage.

Although most popular in autumn, the area is perhaps at its most pleasant in summer when the weather is generally sunny, and there are comparatively fewer visitors.

Go animal spotting

While in the Hachimantai area, keep a lookout for the forest green tree frog, golden eagle, Japanese serow and the Asiatic black bear—a few of the many different animals that call the forests around the peaks home.

The famous Aspite Line

If you are renting a car, don't miss a drive along the Aspite Line. The 27-kilometer long route snakes between peaks and is particularly popular in fall when the area is awash in shades of fiery red and golden brown. In winter the road is shut due to incredible amounts of snow, however during April when it's reopened, the road is flanked by impressive snow walls of pure white.

[Korea] National Memorial Hall of the Korean War abductees

The National Korean War Abduction Memorial Hall is a space to look back on the history of the abduction victims since the Korean War in 1950, recognize the problems of wartime abductees as current problems, not the past, and move forward.

The memorial hall aims to raise public interest in abductees, comfort victims and their families, and re-examine the heartbreaking history of the Republic of Korea. We hope that it will be a space for solving the abduction issue to remember each and every abductee who was a Korean citizen, our precious family, and neighbors and pray for the safe return of those who are alive. In addition, it is hoped that it will be a space to reflect on the sadness of abductees and their families who have lived in difficult times and reflect on the value of peace and the meaning of unification without even being guaranteed a life with their families.

Japan's outdoor activity mecca

This world-class resort in Nagano's Northern Alps welcomes powder enthusiasts from around the globe during the winter, as well as in the summer, when it transforms into an outdoor sports wonderland during the warmer months.

Unparalleled skiing and snowboarding across Hakuba's 10 resorts

Checking out the many festivals occurring throughout the year

Escaping the heat and enjoying outdoor activities in the summer months

How to Get There

Hakuba is well serviced by a network of trains and buses. The area's major transport hub is Nagano Station, and the closest international airports are Haneda and Narita.

From Tokyo, the fastest and simplest option is the Shinkansen from Tokyo Station  to Nagano, then transferring to a bus at Nagano Station. There is also a daily service on the Chuo Line Limited Express Azusa to Minami-Otari, which stops at Hakuba station.

Host of the Winter Olympics

Hakuba began developing in the 1950s, but the 1998 Winter Olympics really brought it to the international stage. Hakuba and Otari Villages and nearby Omachi draw winter sports enthusiasts from around the world.

The area enjoys around 11 meters of annual snowfall, some of the nation's best powder. Enjoy 11 resorts, 146 lifts, and over 200 runs for beginners to advanced skiers.

Ten passes in one

Ten of Hakuba's resorts have teamed up to offer the Hakuba Valley Ticket available for single or multiple day use. Getting around is easy, with buses running between the resorts and villages. Besides the excellent downhill courses, winter activities, such as snowshoeing, snow rafting, and backcountry skiing, are also available.

Check out the winter festivals

There are a variety of events taking place at each resort throughout the winter, so be sure to check out the event listings when you visit.

Revel in the village nightlife

Hakuba has hosted international winter sports fans for decades and has a lively after-dark scene. Two popular areas to stay and unwind in are the Happo area and Echoland area. Both are cosmopolitan without losing their Japanese charm: luxury hotels share the streets with small Japanese inns and craft brew pubs operate beside traditional izakayas, while ramen joints are squeezed in next to restaurants offering world class fare.

Where to stay

Just a short walk from the slopes, Happo area's central location and array of facilities make it a convenient base. English speaking ski and snowboarding lessons are available, as is English daycare. Besides the standard accommodation options, Happo area offers plenty of apartments and chalets. The village's restaurants, bars and shops keep it buzzing until late.

Staying in the adjacent Echoland area requires taking a shuttle to the slopes, of which there are plenty. The accommodation tends to be more economical than Happo's, and it is popular with a younger crowd. Echoland is packed with bars, clubs, and pubs, making its nightlife especially renowned.

Bask in the grandeur of the Northern Alps

The mountains of Hakuba are part of the Northern Chubu-Sangaku National Park. The spectacular alpine scenery, pristine air, and wealth of outdoor activities make Hakuba a popular warm-weather destination as well. Its 800-meter elevation offers a refreshing respite from the heat of the cities.

All-season activities

Mountain trekking fans often use Hakuba as a base and many of the lifts operate in summer and autumn for easier access. And with plenty of outdoor activities available, from the placid canoe trips to adrenaline boosting paragliding, there's no shortage of things to do. The Evergreen Outdoor Center offers a variety of green season activities, including mountain biking tours, rafting, kayaking and even tree climbing.

[Japan] Wagyu—All You Need to Know

A primer to premium Japanese beef

Succulent and sumptuous, Japan's premium beef tastes like no other

Rich, tender and expensive, wagyu, literally "Japanese beef," refers to four breeds of cattle raised in Japan—Japanese Black, Japanese Brown, Japanese Shorthorn and Japanese Polled, as well as their crossbreeds. Of these, the highest grade of wagyu is considered to be cattle born and raised in Japan. Befitting of the meat's superior status, special—sometimes luxurious—methods are used to raise the cattle.

Mouthfeel and taste

A buttery-soft texture is one of wagyu's most defining characteristics. Fat, rich in omega 3 and 6, is woven finely like a net throughout the muscle. This marbling creates a tender, melt-in-the-mouth texture.

Wagyu's sweet, mellow aroma is also said to distinguish it from other kinds of beef. Enjoy the variety of cooking styles unique to Japan using thinly sliced meat, such as sukiyaki and shabu-shabu, to get the most enjoyment from the marbling and texture.

It's all in the pedigree

Japanese wagyu is raised and bred according to stringent guidelines. In order to protect cattle bloodlines, breeding is thoroughly controlled. All calves born from this process are affixed with an individual identification number so they can be traced back to their farm of origin. Each cow has its date of birth, bloodline and place of birth recorded.

From farm to five-star barns

Most wagyu are raised by breeders for eight to ten months and then sent to auction to be sold to farmers who will raise them. Special attention is given to creating an environment where the cattle can live comfortably. These stress-free environments are said to give the beef its tender quality. Pregnant cows and breeding bulls graze on pasture, while calves and other bulls are fed high-grade rice plants, wheat and hay. Clean water, fresh air, spacious ranches and detailed, individualized care are all factors in raising wagyu worthy of their luxurious status.

Grading and the "Wagyu Olympics"

Globally renowned for its extremely high quality, meat and unctuous texture, wagyu must meet strict grading criteria set by the Japan Meat Grading Association.

The beef is graded on two scales, one being the ratio of meat yielded from edible cuts of beef (A-class to C-class), and the quality of marbled fat (1 to 5). Should you decide to give wagyu a try, look for wagyu ranked A-4 or A-5, the best quality. The meat's marbling content, color and luster, firmness and texture and fat brightness and quality are all determined when grading the beef.

Such is wagyu's status that these distinguished bovines even have their own “Wagyu Olympics.” The National Competitive Exhibition of Wagyu (Zenkoku Wagyu Noryoku Kyoshinkai), an event hosted by the Wagyu Registry Association once every five years, is held to provide an indicator of high-quality beef. The cow with the best meat quality is selected from amongst 500 head of cattle and commended as the “Champion Cow.”

Look for the wagyu logo

The Japan Livestock Industry Association created a logo to distinguish true wagyu from Japan from crossbred varieties raised in countries such as the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom. The logo is affixed on wagyu for export that was born and raised in Japan. Check for this logo as a way to verify the high quality of meat when eating wagyu outside of Japan.
