[Korea] Andong Hahoe Village [UNESCO World Heritage]

 

Andong Hahoe Village is a famous folk village that no longer needs to be explained. Hahoe Village, where the Nakdonggang River winds around the village and forms a watery village, is a clan village of Pungsan Ryu Clan, and 70% of the villagers are still Ryu Clan. It was about 600 years ago that Pungsan Ryu Clan settled here, and before Ryu established the site, Heo and Ahn first entered and lived here. According to oral tradition, it is said that the producer of Hahoe mask was Heo Do-ryeong of the middle of Goryeo, and there is a tomb of Heo Jeong-seung in Gwangdeok-dong across the river from Hahoe Village, and the Ryu family cut down every year. In Hahoe Village, there is a saying, "In Heo's place, Ahn's gate, and Ryu's Baepan," which drove the natives to marry into Ryu's house, which motivated the energy of Ahn's family to take out the clan's place.

Hahoe Village was also a popular destination in the international media for Queen Elizabeth of England in 1999 and President Bush of the United States in 2005. Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong's memoirs of the Imjin War, "Jingbirok" and Hahoe Mask, are designated as national treasures, with four treasures, 10 important folk materials, and one historical site, and the entire village was designated as important folk materials in 1984.Byeolsingut Talnori, known as Hahoe Mask Dance, is an important intangible cultural property and was performed to entertain Seonangshin. It is the oldest mask dance in Korea, and it was forcibly stopped during the Japanese deduction period in 1928, and later restored. The play yard consists of eight yards: Mudong Madang, Jujip Madang, Baekjeong Madang, Halmi Madang, Pagyesung Madang, Yangban and Seonbi Madang, Wedding Madang, and Sinbang Madang. Hahoe Mask, a national treasure, is now handed down only nine masks: Gaksi, Jung, Yangban, Seonbi, Chorangi, Imae, Bune, Baekjeong, and Halmi, of which three are lost.

Among the old houses in Hahoe Village, Ipam Old House called Yangjindang is a treasure house of the Pungsan Ryu Clan and Ampa. Sarangchae has the architectural style of the Goryeo Dynasty, and Anchae is an old house where the architectural styles of Goryeo and Joseon coexist. Hahoe Village, another treasure, Chunghyodang, was built by Seo-ae's literary students as a treasure and is an old house in the style of a noble family during the Joseon Dynasty, which was rebuilt by his great-grandchild Ryu Eui-yi. There is a tree commemorating the visit of Queen Elizabeth II of England in the outer yard of the Chunghyodang. In addition, there are many places to see in Hahoe Village, such as Gwichon Old House, the head family of Pungsan Ryu Clan, Bukchon House, which was called 99 kan house on the back of the village, Namchon House built in 21st year of King Jeongjong of Joseon, Byeongsanseowon, Hwacheonseowon, and Gyeomamjeongsa Temple.Hahoe Village is also a popular filming location for movies and dramas. The scandal starring Bae Yong-joon, the YMCA baseball team, and the Korean Peninsula were filmed here in Hahoe Village. This may be because the appearance of the old tradition has been preserved so well that no other set is needed.

Although there is a sense of being tarnished by some commercial marriages, many of them have been overcome by the efforts of the villagers to preserve the tradition.The representative foods of Hahoe Village include Andong Soju, Hutjesabap, Andong Ganmogeo, and Andong Guksi, and there are many attractions such as Bongjeongsa Temple, Gosanseowon, Gwiraejeong, Keimyeongsan Natural Recreation Forest, Hakgasan Natural Recreation Forest, and Waryongsan Mountain.On July 31, 2010, Hahoe Village in Andong and Yangdong Village in Gyeongju were listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List as ``Korean Historical Villages.'' With the registration of the two villages, Korea's world heritage has become the 10th after Seokguram, Bulguksa Temple, Haeinsa Temple Janggyeongpanjeon, Jongmyo (95), Changdeokgung Palace, Suwon Hwaseong (1997), Gyeongju Historic District, Gochang, Hwasun, Ganghwa Dolmen (2000), Jeju Volcanic Island (2007), and Joseon Royal Tomb (2009).

Hahoe Village is a typical clan village where Pungsan Ryu has lived for generations, and is a village where the beauty of traditional Korean houses lives. Andong Hahoe Village, also the birthplace of Confucian scholar and scholar Ryu Un-ryong and Seo-ae Ryu Seong-ryong of the Joseon Dynasty, became more famous on April 21, 1999, when Queen Elizabeth II of England visited Korea as a place of Korean tradition.The name Hahoe here originated from the fact that the Nakdonggang River flows to the east and forms an S-shape to surround the village. In the center of the village, there is a large tiled house, which is the house of the Ryu Clan, and thatched houses with a well-preserved original form surround it. The Nakdonggang River flowing leisurely in front of the village, the beautifully cut Buyongdae, the endless white sand beach, and the dense old pine forest form a superb view. On the other hand, the waterway is reopened in front of Buyongdae, so you can use a ferry.
