brief information

Iwate Beach is part of Sanriku Fuko National Park

The beach was hit by a massive tsunami on March 11, 2011

Rock of Kitayamazaki

a beautiful piece of rock made by nature

The Iwate coast is very famous for its unique rock formations. You can see some of these rocks from Kitayamazaki in Tanohata, where the Unos Cliff, which seems to have been cut 200 meters high, looks down the sea. You can take a walk along various trails in Kitayama-zaki or take a boat tour to see cliffs from the sea.

a bat cave

Although there are no batsmen in the Ryusendo cave, there are many kinds of bats living in four very clear and clean underground lakes. You can buy bottled lake clean mineral water at the cave store. Bats sometimes fly overhead, but most of them hide behind the vast stalactites in this cave.

remnants of destruction

To the north of Miyako is the tarot district, which was severely damaged by the 2011 tsunami. The Taro Kanko Hotel has been transformed into a museum dedicated to the disaster. The six-story hotel was destroyed by a tsunami on four floors. You can be guided by a tour guide on the spot, or you can tour the museum by yourself.

the Buddhist world of paradise

If you follow the coast, you will find Jodo-gahama Beach in the middle. It is good to swim in the calm water of the narrow bay where rain and wind do not hit. The beautiful scenery of the beach created by the uneven rocks is comparable to the Pure Land or Buddhist paradise. The most popular tourist destination around here is the vivid blue cave. You can take a small fishing boat and look around the interior like the famous blue cave on Capri Island.

a sacred place for sports

Located between Miyako and Ofunato, Iwate's beach Kamaishi has long been the mecca of rugby. Occasionally on weekends, you can watch the local semi-professional team Gamaishi Seawaves play. Kamaishi has also been selected as the host of the Rugby World Cup, so if you like rugby, it would be good to visit in 2019.

Go to the south

Pebbles on the coast of Koishi are worn out over the years and sparkle like go stones. Baduk is called "go" in Japanese, and for this reason, the name of this place became Goishi. Like the northern part of the coast, there are many unique shapes of rocks in the south. It is also an experience you can't miss to hear the loud sound like thunder as the water escapes from Kaminariiwa.

with kaminari

the most famous pine tree in Japan

Rikuzentagata is located just south of the coast of Oishi. The city was completely swept away by a tsunami in 2011, but only one pine tree remained there. Unfortunately, the pine tree died of salt water pollution in 2012, and the grafted seedlings took over as a symbol of hope. You can see this pine tree near the beach.

a treasure caught in the sea

In Iwate, you can taste the freshest sushi in Japan with beautiful beaches. Visit either Sanriku Beach or several restaurants in Tanohata, or taste fresh sea urchin, abalone and saury at Miyako's fish market.

a jewel of nature that has been made for many years

The Coogee Pumpkin Museum is located on the outskirts of Coogee. You can also learn about the unique history of fossil resins and watch pumpkin art and jewelry making workshops. Of course, we also sell pumpkin souvenirs.

The Ulleungdo Lighthouse was first lit in 1958 and has served as a watchman for ships sailing near Ulleungdo Island. The lantern tower has a white circular concrete structure and is 7.6m high, and in October 2003, it was replaced with a large-sized lamp with a prism lens rotating type developed by domestic technology, and the light goes up to 50km. [Korea] Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon / Mireuksa Temple Site in Iksan [UNESCO World Heritage Site]

1. Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon

Suwon, which was promoted to Dohobu during the reign of King Taejong of the Joseon Dynasty, was one of the four camps of Hansung. Centering on Hanyang, camps were set up in Gwangju, Ganghwa, Suwon, and Kaesong in the east-west, north-south directions to protect the capital, Hanyang. Hwaseong Fortress, which protects the Suwon land, has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, increasing its historical value. In addition, various permanent performances are held, and the Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival is held every fall to promote Suwon Hwaseong.

Hwaseong Fortress (historic site), built around Paldalsan Mountain (143m), has a total length of 5,700m. Mars is not just a 'star'. Along with its historical meaning, it is an architecturally valuable cultural heritage. The construction of Hwaseong Fortress originated from King Jeongjo's Korean traditional medicine and filial piety. On May 21, 1762, the 38th year of King Yeongjo's reign, Crown Prince Sado died in eight days after being trapped in the middle of the summer due to a party dispute. Prince Sado's son, Jeongjo, was 11 years old at the time. Jeongjo, who succeeded his grandfather King Yeongjo, moved the tomb from Baebongsan Mountain in Yangju (now Jeonnong-dong, Seoul) to Suwon Hwasan Mountain and built the fortress from January 18 to September 20 to comfort his father's late marriage.

Hwaseong Fortress is the most complete form of the Joseon fortress system. It also occupies the most important proportion in the history of the development of Korean fortresses. This castle was built using only the advantages of stone castle and Saturn. The ancestors, who were obsessed with the construction of Hwaseong Fortress, also modeled after Chinese and Western construction techniques to compensate for the weaknesses of the Korean fortress. Matters related to this castle are recorded in detail in the "Hwaseong Sanctuary Uigwe". Dasan Jeong Yak-yong is an indispensable figure in terms of Hwaseong's architecture. Dasan, who was 30 years old at the time, designed a new fortress by referring to 5,000 volumes of "Gogeum Book Collection" imported from China, after reading high-tech books provided in the royal library Gyujanggak. Jeong Yak-yong also devised a crane. Records show that there were 48 facilities in the castle, including the castle gate, but 41 facilities remain, including those currently restored. The buildings 200 years ago, including the treasure Paldalmun Gate, the highest Seojangdae among the facilities surrounding Paldalsan Mountain, Namporu Pavilion built to hide the canvas and shoot at the enemy, and Banghwasuryujeong Pavilion full of the atmosphere of ancestors, are full of Joseon's cultural scent. Hwaseong Fortress was registered as a World Heritage Site along with Changdeokgung Palace at the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in Naples, Italy on December 4, 1997.

The founding of Mireuksa Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in Baekje, is recorded in the History of the Three Kingdoms. Madong, who became a king after marrying Princess Seonhwa of Silla, or King Mu (the 30th King of Baekje, 600-641), was visiting the place name Buddhist monk of Sajasa Temple in Yonghwasan Mountain (now Mireuksan Mountain) with Princess Seonhwa. At that time, Mireuk Samjon suddenly appeared in the pond, and this led to the establishment of Mireuksa Temple. It is said that Jeon (Geumdang), Tap, and Nangmu (Hwarang) were built for the Three Kingdoms. On the other hand, there is an opinion that the foundation of Mireuksa Temple may have had a political purpose as well as the faith of King Mu and Princess Seonhwa. In other words, it is presumed that Mireuksa Temple was built here in Geumma, the center of Mahan forces, to expand Baekje's national power. It is presumed that the level of various cultures such as architecture and crafts of Baekje was at the highest level to build Mireuksa Temple, the largest temple of Baekje, and the techniques of the Three Kingdoms were gathered at that time, as shown in the records of Samguk Yusa that King Jinpyeong of Silla sent Baekgong. It is clear that Mireuksa Temple was the center of the Mireuksa faith in Baekje Buddhism, and it contrasts with Hwangnyongsa Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in Silla, being the center of Hwaeom Thought. Unlike Hwangnyongsa Temple, which is a three-goldang style, Mireuksa Temple is a three-goldang style garam arrangement.Hwangnyongsa Temple embodies Hwaeom ideology with the king at the peak, and Mireuksa Temple embodies Maitreya ideology in Garam. Mireuksa Temple is based on the belief that it will lead the general public to the Yonghwa world.

2. Mireuksa Temple Site in Iksan

* Another relic of Mireuksa Temple Site, the Stone Pagoda of Mireuksa Temple Site and Dangganjiji *

There are two relics in Mireuksa Temple Site, adding to the attractions. One is the stone pagoda of Mireuksa Temple Site, and the other is the Dangganjiji of Mireuksa Temple Site. The stone pagoda of Mireuksa Temple Site is a national treasure and is currently 14.24m high and is the best and largest stone pagoda in Korea. The stone pagoda is almost collapsed, leaving only the sixth floor at the corner of the northeast, but it is originally estimated to be the ninth floor. The stone pagoda of Mireuksa Temple Site was found to be a stone pagoda, not a wooden pagoda, according to a survey by the Mahan Baekje Cultural Institute of Wonkwang University between 1974 and 1975. The pagoda was then identified as nine stories by excavation and restored to nine stories (27.67m high) in 1993. The reason why this stone pagoda is regarded as the best stone pagoda in Korea is that the style of this pagoda faithfully reproduced the angular style of the wooden pagoda, which was popular before that, using stones instead of wood. Party leadership is the left side of the party to support party leadership. It refers to a pillar built on the right, that is, a pillar. The flagpole supports of Mireuksa Temple Site are a treasure, 395cm high, and are believed to have been built before the middle of the Unified Silla Period. On the south side of the stone pagoda of Mireuksa Temple Site, two pillars face east to west with a distance of about 90m from east to west.

[Korea] Andong Hahoe Village [UNESCO World Heritage]

Andong Hahoe Village is a famous folk village that no longer needs to be explained. Hahoe Village, where the Nakdonggang River winds around the village and forms a watery village, is a clan village of Pungsan Ryu Clan, and 70% of the villagers are still Ryu Clan. It was about 600 years ago that Pungsan Ryu Clan settled here, and before Ryu established the site, Heo and Ahn first entered and lived here. According to oral tradition, it is said that the producer of Hahoe mask was Heo Do-ryeong of the middle of Goryeo, and there is a tomb of Heo Jeong-seung in Gwangdeok-dong across the river from Hahoe Village, and the Ryu family cut down every year. In Hahoe Village, there is a saying, "In Heo's place, Ahn's gate, and Ryu's Baepan," which drove the natives to marry into Ryu's house, which motivated the energy of Ahn's family to take out the clan's place.

Hahoe Village was also a popular destination in the international media for Queen Elizabeth of England in 1999 and President Bush of the United States in 2005. Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong's memoirs of the Imjin War, "Jingbirok" and Hahoe Mask, are designated as national treasures, with four treasures, 10 important folk materials, and one historical site, and the entire village was designated as important folk materials in 1984.Byeolsingut Talnori, known as Hahoe Mask Dance, is an important intangible cultural property and was performed to entertain Seonangshin. It is the oldest mask dance in Korea, and it was forcibly stopped during the Japanese deduction period in 1928, and later restored. The play yard consists of eight yards: Mudong Madang, Jujip Madang, Baekjeong Madang, Halmi Madang, Pagyesung Madang, Yangban and Seonbi Madang, Wedding Madang, and Sinbang Madang. Hahoe Mask, a national treasure, is now handed down only nine masks: Gaksi, Jung, Yangban, Seonbi, Chorangi, Imae, Bune, Baekjeong, and Halmi, of which three are lost.

Among the old houses in Hahoe Village, Ipam Old House called Yangjindang is a treasure house of the Pungsan Ryu Clan and Ampa. Sarangchae has the architectural style of the Goryeo Dynasty, and Anchae is an old house where the architectural styles of Goryeo and Joseon coexist. Hahoe Village, another treasure, Chunghyodang, was built by Seo-ae's literary students as a treasure and is an old house in the style of a noble family during the Joseon Dynasty, which was rebuilt by his great-grandchild Ryu Eui-yi. There is a tree commemorating the visit of Queen Elizabeth II of England in the outer yard of the Chunghyodang. In addition, there are many places to see in Hahoe Village, such as Gwichon Old House, the head family of Pungsan Ryu Clan, Bukchon House, which was called 99 kan house on the back of the village, Namchon House built in 21st year of King Jeongjong of Joseon, Byeongsanseowon, Hwacheonseowon, and Gyeomamjeongsa Temple.Hahoe Village is also a popular filming location for movies and dramas. The scandal starring Bae Yong-joon, the YMCA baseball team, and the Korean Peninsula were filmed here in Hahoe Village. This may be because the appearance of the old tradition has been preserved so well that no other set is needed.

Although there is a sense of being tarnished by some commercial marriages, many of them have been overcome by the efforts of the villagers to preserve the tradition. The representative foods of Hahoe Village include Andong Soju, Hutjesabap, Andong Ganmogeo, and Andong Guksi, and there are many attractions such as Bongjeongsa Temple, Gosanseowon, Gwiraejeong, Keimyeongsan Natural Recreation Forest, Hakgasan Natural Recreation Forest, and Waryongsan Mountain. On July 31, 2010, Hahoe Village in Andong and Yangdong Village in Gyeongju were listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List as ``Korean Historical Villages.'' With the registration of the two villages, Korea's world heritage has become the 10th after Seokguram, Bulguksa Temple, Haeinsa Temple Janggyeongpanjeon, Jongmyo (95), Changdeokgung Palace, Suwon Hwaseong (1997), Gyeongju Historic District, Gochang, Hwasun, Ganghwa Dolmen (2000), Jeju Volcanic Island (2007), and Joseon Royal Tomb (2009).

* Andong Hahoe Village (British Queen's Visit Course) *

Hahoe Village is a typical clan village where Pungsan Ryu has lived for generations, and is a village where the beauty of traditional Korean houses lives. Andong Hahoe Village, also the birthplace of Confucian scholar and scholar Ryu Un-ryong and Seo-ae Ryu Seong-ryong of the Joseon Dynasty, became more famous on April 21, 1999, when Queen Elizabeth II of England visited Korea as a place of Korean tradition. The name Hahoe here originated from the fact that the Nakdonggang River flows to the east and forms an S-shape to surround the village. To the east, there is a volcano, the vein of Taebaeksan Mountain, and the end of the stem extends to the village, forming a very low hill. Since the houses are arranged toward a low place around the hills, the left side of the house is not constant and houses are seated in the east, west, north, and south. In the center of the village, there is a large tiled house, which is the house of the Ryu Clan, and thatched houses with a well-preserved original form surround it. The Nakdonggang River flowing leisurely in front of the village, the beautifully cut Buyongdae, the endless white sand beach, and the dense old pine forest form a superb view. On the other hand, the waterway is reopened in front of Buyongdae, so you can use a ferry.

* Various things to see and enjoy in Hahoe Village *

Hahoe Village holds Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori as a permanent performance, and the Andong International Mask Dance Festival is held every fall, and there are many attractions such as Bongjeongsa Temple, Gosanseowon, Gwiraejeong, Keimyeongsan Natural Recreation Forest, Hakgasan Natural Recreation Forest, and Waryongsan Mountain. In particular, on July 31, 2010, Hahoe Village in Andong and Yangdong Village in Gyeongju were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites as 'Korean History Villages'. With the registration of the two villages, Korea's world heritage has become the 10th after Seokguram, Bulguksa Temple, Haeinsa Temple Janggyeongpanjeon, Jongmyo (95), Changdeokgung Palace, Suwon Hwaseong (1997), Gyeongju Historic District, Gochang, Hwasun, Ganghwa Dolmen (2000), Jeju Volcanic Island (2007), and Joseon Royal Tomb (2009).The representative foods of Hahoe Village include Andong Soju, Hutjesabap, Andong Ganmogeo, and Andong Guksi, which are said to have been created by many famous Confucian academies.

[Korea] Gueom-ri Stone Salt Farm

be restored to tourism resources

If you drive along the west coast of Jeju Island, you can meet Salt Ville, Korea's only stone salt farm. Located in Gueom-ri, this stone salt field raised soil in the vast basalt area where lava hardened and broken, filled with seawater in each compartment and dried in the sun to manufacture sea salt. It was once an important means of living for the people of Gueom-ri, with the size of the salt field reaching 4,958m². Those who were called "salts" inherited their precious salt fields only to their eldest daughter. This is where you can guess the characteristics of Jeju, where women's lifestyles were much stronger. The Gueom-ri Stone Salt Farm, which was actively operated until the 1950s, eventually disappeared due to cheap salt from the land. However, the newly restored stone salt field as a tourist resource presents a special scenery that cannot be found anywhere in Jeju. In particular, when the salt field is filled with water, tourists can take pictures of reflections as clear as a mirror.

[Japan] Ginzan Onsen

Unwind, relax and step back in time

Founded on the site of a former silver mine in rural Yamagata, Ginzan Onsen Hot Spring caters to discerning guests with a taste for old-world atmosphere.

Traditional inns line the river to create picturesque scenes more evocative of a Taisho period (1912-26) novel than a modern resort. It's a long way from big city life and well worth the trip.

Don't Miss

Stroll along Ginzan River and the town's pedestrianized streets in your yukata

Visit Shirogane Park and cool yourself by its waterfalls

Stay overnight and dine at one of Ginzan Onsen's many hot spring inns

Take an outdoor rotenburo bath or enjoy a private kashikiri soak

How to Get There

Ginzan Onsen can be accessed by a combination of JR trains and buses.

From Tokyo, take the JR Yamagata Shinkansen to Oishida Station (three hours, 20 minutes), then catch a bus to Ginzan Onsen (35 minutes). The train is covered by the Japan Rail Pass , but the bus is not. Be aware that buses only depart Oishida Station every 60-90 minutes.

Visitors traveling by car are required to park at a designated parking area outside the town center. Many inns offer a shuttle service into town from the lot.

Get to know the onsen-kyo

Popular among Japanese travelers, the term onsen-kyo is associated with small, quaint towns and cozy inns that offer accommodation, food and hot spring bathing. As weekend retreats, they are popular with all age groups, from young families to retirees. This cherished aspect of travel in Japan often goes unnoticed by foreign visitors, so live like a local and dive into onsen-kyo culture.

The area is a car-free town center with no modern buildings in sight.

Having checked into one of the town's many inns, visitors walk the streets without the usual concern of cars zipping past to beat the traffic light.

In the proud tradition of Japanese inns, Ginzan Onsen's ryokan offer up sumptuous local dishes to meet the standards of their mostly Japanese clientele.

Such stuff as dreams are made of

Beautiful buildings surrounded by an unspoiled rural setting ensure that Ginzan Onsen is pleasant all year round. Long summer days are perfect for lazy strolls down idyllic streets in a yukata. In winter, the town really works its magic. The sight of the buildings blanketed in snow and illuminated by the soft glow of gaslights leaves a lasting impression.

Many Japanese visitors come to Ginzan Onsen in search of its Taisho period ambience. Anyone familiar with Mishima Yukio's novel 'Spring Snow' will delight at how the setting blends traditional Japanese aesthetics with what was once seen as modern sophistication. The gaslights and absence of motor vehicles help maintain the atmosphere.

The finer points of hot spring bathing

Rotenburo are outdoor baths-usually hidden from outside view-which allow you to take in the surrounding scenery from the comfort of a hot spring. Another attractive option is arranging a kashikiri session in a private bath, whereby you and traveling companions can have a tub all to yourselves for a short time.

Silver everything

Unsurprisingly for a town founded on a silver mine, Ginzan Onsen takes both its name (literally, Silver Mountain) and iconography from the element. The popular Shirogane Park boasts an impressive 22 meter tall waterfall, and you'll also find an illuminated cave which is well-lit and ideal for taking pictures.

Old meets new meets old

Ginzan Onsen's one notable concession to modernity is the Fujiya ryokan, a striking building designed by famed architect Kuma Kengo. With a blend of modern and traditional elements, including the incorporation of bare timber and white plaster, it stands out from its surroundings while also keeping one foot firmly in the past.

[Japan] Sake 101—The Ultimate Guide to Japanese Sake

Delve deeper into Japanese drinking culture and say "kanpai" with the country's drink of choice

Drinking culture runs deep in Japan, and sake is undoubtedly the country's most representative liquor

Known more commonly in Japan as nihonshu, sake comes in a range of flavor profiles and proofs and can be enjoyed hot, cold or at room temperature. Since sake is so important to the nation, a rich set of customs surround its consumption and production. It's easy to enjoy drinking sake, but choosing and ordering can be daunting for first-timers. Exploring the wide variety of this Japanese rice wine should be fun, not scary. To ease some of that anxiety, this guide breaks down the basics of the national drink.

Social drinking is common in Japanese culture

Where to drink sake?

Sake can be enjoyed anywhere in Japan. Sake is a favorite tipple everywhere from bars to high-end restaurants. Most places that serve alcohol in Japan will have some basic sake options. For enthusiasts or those looking to branch out, there are many specialty sake bars and izakaya around the country with a particularly wide stock and knowledgeable staff.

If you'd prefer to buy sake to take away, you can purchase mainstream brands at local convenience stores and supermarkets. A more complete selection is available at liquor stores, department stores and specialty sake shops.

Drink from a masu for a real sake experience

How is sake served?

Sake can be served chilled, warmed or at room temperature. Some types, like ginjo, are preferred cool, while junmai is often enjoyed at room temperature or warmed. Each individual sake has its own temperature that best brings out the flavors, and personal preference is extremely important as well.

A traditional sake set consists of a serving carafe called tokkuri and smaller personal cups called ochoko. Sometimes a small glass is placed inside a box, or masu. In some places, the sake will be poured until it overflows into the masu.

Since masu were the main sake vessels in the past, most are sized to one standard serving of 180 ml, called go. At many bars and restaurants, you will be expected to order sake by number of go. Ichi-go and ni-go are one and two servings, respectively. Standard sake bottles are 720 ml, and are known as yongobin.

There are many types of sake—find your new favorite

Types of sake

There are a number of sake types, classified according to ingredients, production methods and the degree of rice polishing. Rice's outer layer is not ideal for brewing, so it is stripped in the polishing process.

Honjozo means the rice has been polished to 70 percent, meaning 30 percent of the grain has been removed. Ginjo is made from rice polished to 60% or less and fermented slowly at low temperatures. Ginjo with grains polished to 50% or less is called daiginjo.

Junmai is a type of sake made without brewing alcohol and using only rice, water, yeast and rice malt (koji, cultivated for food production and sprinkled on steamed rice to secrete enzymes). The term junmai is also sometimes used in combination with ginjo and daiginjo sake.

A lower polishing ratio means more rice is used and more time is spent polishing the rice, resulting in a higher price, but a higher rank does not necessarily mean it is a 'good sake'. Similarly, junmai is not a definitive mark of quality, as talented producers often use brewers alcohol or other additives to enhance the flavor or smoothness.

Other types of sake include namazake, unpasteurized sake; nigorizake (or simply nigori), sake filtered through a coarse cloth, resulting in a cloudy drink with a creamy mouthfeel; and shiboritate, which is released straight from the brewery without undergoing any maturation.

It is important to note that in Japanese “sake” actually refers to alcohol in general, while the rice brew specifically is called nihonshu. There are a number of other traditional Japanese liquors, including shochu—a distilled spirit—and umeshu, a sweet plum liqueur made by steeping the fruit in alcohol.

Sake goes exceptionally well with all types of food

Sake and food pairing

Sake is an extremely versatile drink and pairs quite well with food. Classic Japanese foods such as sushi, sashimi, and tempura are obvious accompaniments, but sake with cheese, oysters or vegetables can be just as delicious. Sake is significantly higher in umami than other brews so it can enhance the flavor of very rich dishes like stews, ramen, and steak.

Like wine or beer, some varieties pair better with some foods than others. When choosing the right match at a restaurant or izakaya, feel free to ask the staff to recommend the best sake for your meal.

Sake alcohol content

Most sake is around 15 percent alcohol, higher proof than most other fermented drinks like beer or wine but lower than most distilled spirits. Almost all sake is brewed to about 20 percent and watered down before bottling.

Genshu refers to sake that has not been diluted and therefore has an alcohol content of about 20 percent and a bolder flavor.
